The romantic railway of Renon

The railway of Renon made its maiden trip on 13th August 1907 which led from the centre of Bolzano directly up to the Renon. The almost 1,000 metres difference in altitude was overcome by means of a gear wheel drive. The railway of Renon was a mountain rail built according to the Swiss role model. It was the time of "Belle Époque" and the aim was to make mountainous areas easily accessible for wealthy tourists. This connection between mountainous area and the city of Bolzano remained intact in spite of two world wars and the related economic crises. In the year 1966 a cable railway substituted the former gear drive as it didn't seem up-to-date anymore. On 17th September 2007, the cable railway was shut down after 40 years of service. It was substituted by an innovative, state-of-the-art railway which connects Oberbozen/Renon with the provincial capital Bolzano at 4 minute intervals since May 2009. At the high plateau of Renon the so-called "Bahndl" is still in use (adapted to technological change) and operates at 30 minutes intervals between Klobenstein and Oberbozen all year long from 06:40 am to 10:40 pm.

The station of the historical railway lies only 300 metres underneath our hotel and can be reached easily in 4 minutes. The station Lichtenstern lies exactly halfway between Oberbozen and Klobenstein. The journey to both villages takes about 8 minutes.

The small railway operates at 30 minutes intervals and takes you to Oberbozen and Klobenstein.

The ropeway of Renon connecting Oberbozen with Bolzano in 12 minutes, established with locals and guests as a popular and comfortable means of transport. The newly constructed cable railway is in operation since 23rd May 2009 and is one of the most modern ropeways of Europe. Modern gondolas accommodating 30 passengers bring people from Bolzano to the high plateau of Renon and vice versa at 4 minute intervals - without queueing, waiting time and schedules!
